Speaking of The Weather

On the news this morning Bob Maxon (NBC 30) mentioned a new hurricane system named Hermine (pronounced Her-meen), and everyone was wondering why not "Hermione," as in Harry Potter's Hermoine. Also, a few weeks ago we had back-to-back hurricanes Bonnie, and Charlie. Sadly, a missed opportunity to name the third of the season Clyde, and it made me wonder who names these hurricanes, and is there any named after me?

After a little research I found out that World Meteorological Organization is the group that names the hurricanes. They rotate six lists of names every six years, only adding a new one, or retiring a name if a hurricane is extremely deadly or costly. I was thinking, what if they were sponsored? Everything seen on TV is sponsored by something these days, so why not a weather event like a hurricane?

Who's to say it couldn't be named after a beer, prescription drug, or car company, like Mercedes. Or even a more currently fashionable name like the ones seen on the SSA's Popular Baby Names list, like Mercedes, if 936 people were named after the car last year, why not hurricanes too?
