Christopher Dodd Announces 2008 Presidential Bid

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut's senior senator is setting his sights on the White House.Dodd announced early Thursday morning that he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination for 2008. He made the announcement on the "Imus in the Morning" show, a syndicated radio program that originates from New York radio station WFAN-AM.Dodd said he would forgo an exploratory committee and would "formally file (Thursday) and become a full-fledged candidate for the presidency."
He said that he made his decision to run after talking to many, many people about their concerns. He said there's a sense that things aren't going as well as they should here and abroad.Dodd becomes the fourth Democratic candidate to make a presidential candidacy official. He's now running against outgoing Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, former vice presidential candidate and Sen. John Edwards and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Iowa.Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Barack Obama, D-Ill. are also expected to run.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jessica Schneider reported Dodd will immediately begin traveling with stops in Iowa and South Carolina this weekend.
Dodd also becomes the fourth Connecticut politician to run for president since 2000 -- U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman and Green Party candidate Ralph Nader ran in 2004. President George W. Bush, a New Haven native, ran in 2000 and 2004.
Dodd, 62, has served in the Senate for 25 years and is a former Democratic National Committee chairman. His father, Thomas Dodd, was also a Connecticut senator.
