Governor Rell's Gas Tax Petition

Governor M. Jodi Rell is taking action against the ever rising cost of gas during the summer driving season. 11,000 people have voiced their opinion already.

The Governor's letter to voters states:

"Gasoline prices in Connecticut have reached record highs. As of May 25, the average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Connecticut reached $3.28 – that’s 30-cents higher than the price one month ago! To add to the burden of the spike in gas prices, the petroleum products gross receipts tax rate is currently over 6 percent – and it will rise to 7 percent on July 1!

I’m taking action and I want you to join me. The summer driving season is upon us – that is why we need action now from our state and federal officials. We are owed an answer for the recent spike in gasoline prices across the country and whether our state legislators are going to act on my proposal to cap the gross receipts tax on petroleum products.

In addition, we need the Democratic leadership in the state legislature to join Republicans in suspending the state’s 25-cent gasoline tax from Memorial Day through Labor Day so Connecticut residents can benefit from some relief at the gas pumps during this busy driving season. This proposal should be debated and voted on before the session ends on June 6."
