I'm delighted, as all parents must be, that this glorious facility is at last a reality.
However, with America (and the world) crying out for chemists, scientists, biologists et al, I am surprised at the CT Science Center's combo-charge of $16-$19. This is no way to encourage parents to try and engage their offspring in the sciences and these charges are symptomatic of both state and country putting profit before education and take little account of the current economic malaise.
CT tax payers should also be disappointed that the Center's trustees are predominantly noticeable for the absence of any connection to its modus operandi, and despite the chairman's very early college interest that area, his recent term as CEO of Pfizer does little to encourage confidence in his appointment. More effort should be made to appoint future trustees who have, at the very least, a career background in the sciences.
Further, hours of 10-5 promote and encourage log jams at week-ends. These hours merely cater to the staff and do little to promote the Center as a resource for working parents who are serious about supplementing their older children's scholastic curriculum during the school week.
The Center should be free for all children and students with a parent/group discount when accompanied by same, and also open until 8.00pm Monday through Saturday with special and longer hours to recognize/celebrate particular events that occur throughout the year.
